Science

With respect to secondary research, there are over forty scientific articles in which the biochemically active components of the Mangosteen are laboratory-tested.

By contrast with most medicinal plants the phytoceutical substances in the Mangosteen have been studied in depth by medical and pharmacological researchers.

We are continuing to peruse about a dozen articles (see below on this page for some PDF files of scientific studies); it is already clear now that the numerous health benefits of the fruit can be substantiated by scientific research. We were impressed by how much scientific evidence underpins the personal experience of those taking the Mangosteen.

Among the phytoceutical substances in the Mangosteen there is a recently-discovered category of very active substances called “xanthones”.  Research is still ongoing on the xanthones in the Garcinia mangostana and up to now over 50 xanthones have been identified, several of which have been studied in depth.

In 2001 one single pharmacological study at a European University ascertained that the xanthones in the Mangosteen had the following pharmaceutical properties :

  • anti-depressant
  • active against Tuberculosis
  • anti-bacterial and fungicidal
  • anti-viral, anti-leukaemia
  • active against tumors
  • anti-ulcers
  • active against Diabetes

However, xanthones are not the only active substances in the Mangosteen.Mangosteen

Polyphenols and catechins, the powerful antioxidant substances against tumours, are also present in considerable quantities.

Other important ingredients, polysaccharides, are apparently responsible for the antibacterial and fungicidal effect of the fruit.

And finally the fruit also contains potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, as well as vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C.
